What is Enactus?
Enactus is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action. We provide a platform for outstanding university students to create community development projects that put people’s own ingenuity and talents at the center of improving their livelihoods.
Enactus UNSW falls under Enactus Australia which is one of 36 countries which Enactus has expanded to. At Enactus UNSW, we work together focusing on driving positive social impacts in areas such as economic stability, social issues and environmental sustainability.
What we stand for:
entrepreneurial—having the perspective to see an opportunity and the talent to create value from that opportunity.
action—the willingness to do something and the commitment to see it through even when the outcome is not guaranteed.
us—a group of people who see themselves connected in some important way; individuals that are part of a greater whole.
Who do we empower?
Over the past year we have helped in providing the long-term unemployed community education and actual paid work experience. Currently we are focusing on groups including single-parent families, children on the streets and people with disabilities. However, in the near future we envision ourselves partnering with a broader range of disadvantaged groups. Hence the potential is limitless.
What does the program do?
The program primarily delivers first-hand training to the beneficiaries. Fortunate Food Co. provides teachers, venue and facilities for such training opportunity. Beneficiaries learn how to make chutneys and other fresh side products that we sell. In addition, they will have the chance to practice their customer service skills at the Bondi Market which enable them to gain transferable soft skills preparing them for their future career.
We are also planning on providing other training workshops to enhance the knowledge and skills of our beneficiaries. Examples include resume workshop and interview training. We tailor our program for each group of disadvantaged group that we work with. We believe this is the most effective way to help them maximise their potential and achieve their personal goals.
Where does the profit go?
This is a social enterprise, meaning, the money Fortunate Food Co. receives eventually goes back into helping the community. We pay our beneficiaries when they attend the program and produce chutney for Bondi Market. After deducting all the cost of goods sold, the remaining profit either helps the enterprise expand so we can reach more beneficiaries or it is donated to selected charities in our community. Members of the Enactus UNSW do not receive money from this enterprise, we are here to make others in the society more well-off.
